The Story Behind Star Queen Battle
Every grid is a battlefield. Every queen is a sovereign. Here is the myth at the heart of the puzzle.
A Galaxy Divided
Long before the first star charted the void, a cosmic grid stretched across the universe — a lattice of power, territory, and order. Each colored region of the grid belonged to a different stellar dynasty: the crimson domain of the Ember Queens, the cerulean expanse of the Frost Sovereigns, the emerald territory of the Verdant Court, and dozens more. Each dynasty was ancient, proud, and unwilling to share.
The Three Laws of Placement
To prevent all-out war, the ancient Star Council decreed the Three Laws. First: each dynasty may claim exactly one cell within its own territory — no more, no less. Second: no two queens may occupy the same row or the same column. Third: no queen may cast her shadow diagonally upon another — every queen must be fully isolated. Violate even one law, and the entire grid collapses into conflict. Satisfy them all, and the galaxy achieves perfect equilibrium.
Your Role as Arbiter
You are the Arbiter — a neutral architect of cosmic order, tasked with finding the one arrangement that satisfies every dynasty simultaneously. The queens do not move on their own. They wait for you to see the logic the chaos conceals. Each correct placement brings the universe one step closer to harmony. Each mistake ripples outward, triggering cascading conflict.
There is always exactly one solution. Your task is to find it.
The Puzzle in Practice
Star Queen Battle is a modern interpretation of the classic N-Queens problem, extended with the colored region constraint that makes each puzzle uniquely solvable. With board sizes ranging from 5×5 for new Arbiters to 10×10 for seasoned veterans, and dozens of distinct configurations, every grid tells a slightly different story — and demands a slightly different solution.
